چکیده

Abstract The mid-Cretaceous thermal maximum (KTM) during Cenomanian to Santonian times from ca. 100 83 Ma is considered among Earth's warmest sustained intervals of the Phanerozoic. time interval also characterized by major paleoceanographic changes in form an oceanic anoxic event and flooding epicontinental seaways, such as Western Interior Seaway North America. We report carbonate clumped isotope (?47) paleotemperatures (T?47) KTM measured oyster fossils Seaway. Following screening specimens for diagenesis exclusion geographic zones with evidence consistent solid-state ?47 reordering, a mean T?47 28–34 °C (95% confidence standard error mean) primary calcite quantifies extreme mid-latitude warmth When combined existing Campanian Maastrichtian marine records, new data constrain Late Cretaceous temperature trends underlying evolution American faunal stratigraphic records. These peak highlight potential this proxy quantitatively resolve upper limits Phanerozoic greenhouse climates.

Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway Drilling Project: an Overview

The Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway Drilling Project was begun in 1991 under the auspices of the U.S. Continental Scientific Drilling Program. It was intended to be a multidisciplinary study of Cretaceous carbonate and silicicl.tic rocks in cores from bore holes along a transect across the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The study focuses on middle Cretaceous (Cenomanian to Campanian) st...

Sharks that pass in the night: using Geographical Information Systems to investigate competition in the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway.

One way the effects of both ecology and environment on species can be observed in the fossil record is as changes in geographical distribution and range size. The prevalence of competitive interactions and species replacements in the fossil record has long been investigated and many evolutionary perspectives, including those of Darwin, have emphasized the importance of competitive interactions ...

A New Troodontid Theropod, Talos sampsoni gen. et sp. nov., from the Upper Cretaceous Western Interior Basin of North America

BACKGROUND Troodontids are a predominantly small-bodied group of feathered theropod dinosaurs notable for their close evolutionary relationship with Avialae. Despite a diverse Asian representation with remarkable growth in recent years, the North American record of the clade remains poor, with only one controversial species--Troodon formosus--presently known from substantial skeletal remains. ...

Sea-level Control on Source-rock Development: Perspectives from the Holocene Black Sea, the Mid-cretaceous Western Interior Basin of North America, and the Late Devonian Appalachian Basin

Changing sea level is a major factor in the pattern of enrichment of organic carbon in marginal and epicontinental seas. Organiccarbon-rich facies accumulate preferentially during major transgressive episodes. Rising sea level promotes retention of nutrients in marginal seas through several possible mechanisms, leading to higher organic production and/or eutrophic conditions. Transgressive seas...

The first reported ceratopsid dinosaur from eastern North America (Owl Creek Formation, Upper Cretaceous, Mississippi, USA)

Ceratopsids ("horned dinosaurs") are known from western North America and Asia, a distribution reflecting an inferred subaerial link between the two landmasses during the Late Cretaceous. However, this clade was previously unknown from eastern North America, presumably due to limited outcrop of the appropriate age and depositional environment as well as the separation of eastern and western Nor...
